Ultimate Buffet

I'm wondering if I should send our critic Tom Karpel to review this place.

Ultimate Buffet, near the Super Target at Powers and Carefree, claims to be the largest buffet in town, and in a town brimming with Golden Corrals and 200-item Chinese buffets, that's quite a claim.

I went there last weekend for lunch with my kids and was impressed by the variety.

This is owned by a relative of the Empire Asian Buffet at Vickers and Academy, and you'll notice plenty of similarities: Lots of Chinese entrees and dim sum, a pretty spread of sushi. But this place also is loaded with American food.

Most of the American choices should be be ignored. The potatoes taste reconstituted. The meatloaf is soggy and bland. The pizza tastes like cardboard with cheese and sauce.

But the steak is OK, and the shrimp and beef skewers are good.

Still, my favorite is the sushi, which tasted fresh and flavorful.

Prices are about in line with other buffet places: $6.95 for adults (less for kids and seniors) for lunch, $10.99 for dinner.

I loved the food but the first time it was not hot enough. The second time was better but still room for improvement.Hot should be HOT!

I went to the Ultimate Buffet the other day for lunch. I was amazed. I was expecting less than average steam table fare so I asked if I could check out their offerings. Well, it was quite an array of different foods. I enjoyed their salt and pepper shrimp, their tasty grilled shrimp on skewers, and their hot and sour soup. If you think that I like shrimp, you are right. The shrimp on the salad section was relatively tasteless though. I did try the various chicken dishes and found them to be flavorful as well. I will without a doubt return the next time I am shopping in this neck of the woods. Maggie

My wife wanted to try the Ultimate Buffet...so we packed up the boys (8,9,and 13) and went today (Dec 23). The food was good, with a good variety. The check on the other hand, was not. $56 for the 5 of us...for lunch! OUTRAGEOUS!! Now I realize why they didn't give us the check until after we had eaten. I've taken the family to Texas Roadhouse and had a far better meal for less. Needless to say, we won't be back. ed...

I enjoyed the ultimate buffet-for lunch it is a good value but the $10.99 for dinner and all day on the weekends is high, but they do serve more seafood and higher quality meets. But for a family that makes it expensive for sure! I though the quality was better than other chinese buffets and skewers were great especially the shrimp.

UB is pretty darn good. My husband and I have been there twice and were impressed with the flavors and variety considering this was a buffet. And the added plus was you can have a beer or wine with your meal. I think this may be a first for this type of buffet. Also, this place does not have the run down look that Empire Asian has. We think UB is a relatively inexpensive place to dine considering you have some cool choices of fish, sushi and steak. Yes, buffet food could always be hotter but I will say that I found most choices fresh and tasty. I guess that maybe this is pricey for a family on weekends. But for adults that want a variety to choose from and an adult beverage, you would be hard pressed to come up with a better price. My only complaint is that my husband and I tend to "roll" out of UB because we usually overindulge due to the many choices that UB has to offer. Try it, you might like it. KarenVC

Good points on all the comments!

I agree. Good food. It's a bit expensive, especially if you bring the gang. Frankly, I don't know if I'll go back because I can take the kids to AI Sushi or Sakura and get better food, and as much as we want, for less money.

I think the joy of most buffets is the first impression. Man, that's a lot of food.

It's rarely quite as good on your plate ... with the exception of the Bellagio in Vegas and The Broadmoor Sunday Brunch.

I have been to all the big buffets in town and UB is by far the best. Way better than Empire Asian Buffet or Golden Corral. Everything from the food to the atmoshpere are high class. I've been to Bellagio in Vegas and the food are really good but $40 a person you would expect the crab legs to be hot but they put it on the cold bar.
Anyway, UB has so much selections that by the time you sit down, the food is not very hot anymore. I found out that it is better to look around first, just get a few items, don't get everything at once. The food will be much hotter...Howard

My family and I eat there quite a bit. We like the variety. 10.99 is the same price as Country Buffet for the dinner meal and you will never find crab legs at CB. Nor will you find shrimp that are larger than a dime and not heavily battered to make them look like real shrimp at CB. Ed left a comment that his bill was 56.00 for 5! What the hell did they drink? 6.95 x 3 is about 21.00 then .70 per year of age on the two younger boys is 5.60 and 6.30 for a total of 33.00. Sodas and such are 1.95...drink water! Still not 56.00!
For the quality of seafood and variety, it's a good deal.

My family and I eat there quite often. We think it is the best buffet in town. Although they do offer senior citizens discounts we found out when we took our parents and they loved it. They are one of the only restaurants in town that do not offer military discount. Even Wendys gives military discount.

"ed", I am with you. Weekends, holidays and nights are DINNER prices (anonymous did not note that when doing his/her math).
We are a family of seven. Because we have five kids UB was a one time thing. Golden Corral and Country Buffet offer so many coupons for kids to eat free, plus CB has a military discount too. We never pay full price there.
UB had really good food when we were there. I loved it! It's just too much money. If they had a kids night with discounts we would be there.
Empire is just yucky! With very little food and is over priced as well.
I wish we could afford to go to UB on my birthday. But we'll hit Red Lobster or Tomo Sushi instead. They offer discounts/coupons.
I know a few families that just can't afford the kid prices at UB! No kids meal should be over $5 and that should include a drink. So $8 for my oldest is CRAZY!
