Plate update

It seems a curse of mine that my favorite restaurants often end up getting panned by my critics.

Paravicini's comes to mind. It was and is my favorite local Italian place. Ralph Millis, our former dining critic blasted it ... and for good reason. He had a terrible experience. It happens, even at great restaurants. His second visit was just fair.

I gritted my teeth and ran the review, knowing it was honest and fair and was slamming a place I loved.

This week, I wondered if I'd face the same situation when Tom Karpel reviewed Plate, my new favorite restaurant in town.

On Friday, you'll find out if Tom liked it or broke my heart.

Ok, I'm glad I am posting this BEFORE the Plate review comes out in the Gazette. This is the second time I have dined at Plate. The first time was for lunch (as I posted earlier) and was excellent. So I have been dying to go back. My husband and I ate there tonight. He had the tuna tartar(outstanding) the niciose salad (brilliant) and the most perfectly seared salmon on top of a creamy yet fresh tasting risotto.

I had the the foie gras, oh and I don't care what anyone says, it is the most delicately indulgent and beautiful taste ever. And Plate does a wonderful job with it.

I selected the Monoravioli as my entree. I was told it was 3 different mushrooms sauteed with shallots and celery with ricotta cheese and a cream sauce in a single "crepe-like" pasta, topped with lightly sauteed spinach and garlic. Sounded heavenly.

When it came it looked better than I imagined, but was so heavy I could'nt finish it. The first bite was awesome, but the second was thick and heavy. It could have been a perfect dish had it been a little looser and a little lighter, because the flavors where there. My husband discribed it as thick and pasty in the mouth.

But that being said, I have been there twice and would go back again. The staff is incredable, and having just come out of two bad weeks of storms, I can easily forgive one little dish.

This place deserves our communities support, they have proven themselves on the southside and will do so on the northside.

Honest but true. Oh and thanks for the tickets Warren, grandma took the kids and we played with the new Bond tonight.

Cheers

Mmmmmm.

I haven't had the ravioli yet ... sounds kinda heavy.

I do share your adoration of the nicoise salad and foie gras.

And I stopped there after a party with the family recently just to have more of the creme brule. I shouldn't have given the kids spoons, darn it!

Our photographer who shot Plate Tuesday couldn't resist stopping for lunch... she had the scallops... and loved 'em, of course.
